WooCommerce or a bespoke shop: which when?

When WooCommerce is more than enough and when a bespoke shop pays off, without talking you into a platform.

Choosing a shop is rarely about the flashiest features and almost always about management, integrations and cost over time. WooCommerce covers the need for most entrepreneurs comfortably. Sometimes bespoke is better. Here is how to choose.

What WooCommerce is good at

WooCommerce turns WordPress into a full shop you manage yourself. You easily connect payment providers, shipping and stock, and your team works in a familiar environment. For a range you want to manage yourself, with a manageable budget, it is a strong and affordable base.

As with regular WordPress sites, the trap is in plugins. A shop that fills up with extensions gets slow at checkout, and a slow checkout costs sales directly. Built light, WooCommerce stays fast.

When bespoke fits better

Bespoke for a shop is the choice when one or more of these apply:

  • A sales process that departs from the standard cart.
  • Deep integrations with an ERP, POS or stock system.
  • Very large ranges or traffic peaks where speed is critical.
  • A customer experience that will not fit into a theme.

Start with what you sell

The right choice follows from your product and your process, not from the platform. Sell a clear range and want to manage it yourself, and WooCommerce is often exactly enough. Is the value in a custom process or integration, then bespoke pays off.
