WordPress or bespoke: which fits your organisation?
Not a holy war but a level-headed trade-off: when WordPress is the right call, and when bespoke pays off.
WordPress or bespoke is often a holy war, which is a shame, because it is simply a trade-off. Both are good choices, but for different situations. This piece helps you choose based on what your site really has to do, not on what an agency happens to prefer building.
What WordPress is good at
WordPress is the most used CMS in the world, and for good reason. Your team often already knows it, there is a huge ecosystem, and for a classic content site it is quick to set up and affordable to run. If you mainly need pages, news and a contact form, WordPress is rarely the wrong choice.
The trap is in the extensibility. Every plugin solves something but adds weight and risk. A WordPress site that fills up with plugins and a heavy page-builder gets slow and vulnerable. Built well, with a clean theme and as few plugins as possible, WordPress stays fast.
When bespoke fits better
Bespoke is the choice once your process, brand or functionality no longer fits a template. Think of your own interactions, integrations with systems you already use, or demands on speed and scale that a stock theme cannot meet. Then you build exactly what you need, without ballast you never use.
In short, you choose bespoke when one or more of these hold:
- You have functionality no plugin covers cleanly.
- Speed and Core Web Vitals are critical for your audience or SEO.
- You need to integrate with internal systems or a custom application.
- Your brand demands its own form, not a theme with your colours.
The middle road exists too
It is not all or nothing. A well-built WordPress site can later grow into a bespoke or headless setup, provided the content and structure are set up for it. Start with what you need now, and keep the door open to later.
